Embarking on a three-week journey through New Zealand's North Island, our adventure started in Wellington, where we reconnected with friends and explore the vibrant city. From there, we travelled to Napier, immersing ourselves in its unique Art Deco architecture and rich wine culture. Next, we challenged ourselves with the breathtaking Tongariro Crossing, a hike across dramatic landscapes. In Taupo, we relaxed by the crystal-clear lake and perhaps try some thrilling activities. Rotorua awaited with its geothermal wonders and a memorable kayaking experience. Our next stop, Tauranga, offered beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. The trip ended in Auckland, where urban excitement meets stunning natural beauty, rounding off an unforgettable exploration of the North Island's diverse offerings. Please find all our highlights listed below hoping you’ll enjoy them too!

Best city stops in New Zealand

While the cities might not be the primary draw of New Zealand, given its renowned natural landscapes, there are certainly urban highlights that shouldn't be missed. In Wellington, the capital city offers a dynamic cultural scene, with the Te Papa museum as a standout attraction. Napier, known for its striking Art Deco architecture and wineries, provides a unique blend of history and taste. Auckland, the largest city, serves as a gateway to exploring the North Island, boasting the iconic Sky Tower and vibrant waterfront precincts. These cities offer a glimpse into the diverse urban fabric that complements New Zealand's natural wonders.

Wellington

If you are coming by train + boat from the South Island, it is likely that Wellington will be your first stop. The city is cute, quite gentrified (think Manchester, UK) and has a some great cafés and museums. If you have one day to spend there, my recommendation would be, especially as a family to visit the Te Papa museum which not only is free but is probably also one of the best children friendly museums I’ve seen in my life.

One restaurant to remember: Ombra - small Italian (fusion) plates, great wines, their duck Risotto probably changed our lifes.

Napier

Napier was a nice day stop. It stands out for its distinctive Art Deco architecture, a phoenix risen from the ashes of the 1931 earthquake, and its celebrated wine culture, nestled in the picturesque Hawke's Bay region. Good place to also buy some wines. Our favorite Winery stop: Brookfields Vineyards.

Auckland

A bit bigger than most NZ cities, Auckland is cool for its vibrant mix of urban sophistication and stunning natural beauty. The city's lively cultural scene, diverse dining options, and waterfront precincts offer a cosmopolitan experience, while nearby beaches, islands, and volcanic landscapes provide ample opportunities for adventure and relaxation. For those who might be familiar with the place, it feels like a mini Sydney!

Fav place to eat: The Fish Market and its food stalls (and pubs).

The best of the North Island of New Zealand: the Hikes

In the North Island of New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is celebrated as one of the greatest single-day hikes in the world, offering an alpine adventure across a volcanic landscape that is both stark and magnificent. It features the Emerald Lakes, whose vivid colors are a stunning contrast to the surrounding moonscape. You can read about our full experience on how to do the Tongariro crossing with a baby here.

Another notable hike is the Waikaremoana Great Walk in the secluded Te Urewera area. This trek takes hikers through ancient rainforests, past remote beaches, and offers breathtaking views over the pristine Lake Waikaremoana.

Mount Maunganui (Mauao) provides a more accessible yet rewarding hike, with its summit track leading to panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty. This coastal walk is popular for both sunrise and sunset, offering a unique perspective of the ocean and Tauranga city.

The Te Aroha Track in the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park leads to the highest point in the Waikato region, offering hikers soothing hot springs at the base and stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the summit.

Each of these hikes showcases the diverse beauty of the North Island, from volcanic landscapes and ancient forests to coastal views and tranquil lakes, offering something for every type of adventurer. Please note that there are so many more and this is just the ones we were lucky enough to try!
